Art at the Chapel Royal, September sees the start of the Big Wall Big Work with Ross Borton’s painting ‘The Phoenix Rises’

Big Wall Big Work is a continuation of Art at the Chapel Royal started in the 2026 Brighton Festival. We are providing each participating artist with a lovely bigwall. Artist will exhibit a large work for a month so that people can enjoy engaging with it.

Large contemporary paintings are frequently behind corporate walls, or in selective galleries, with the consequence that artists motivated to make big work are limited in where to show it, and people do not see it. In 2026 the Chapel Royal Artists’ Open House exhibition ‘Outside In’ aimed to draw attention to the world we inhabit alongside our internal need for quiet reflection and making meaning. Big Wall Big Work at the Chapel Royal continues this intention.

The Chapel Royal is a beautiful Anglican church at the bottom of North St, Brighton, first opened in 1795. In addition to services on Sunday and Wednesday, the church hosts groups in the hall, and concerts and events in the main body of the building. When we can stay open for people to come inside, we do, providing a calm space of respite in the middle of the city. There is a regular Saturday morning charity Café Royale serving drinks and homemade cake, and well-attended concerts every Tuesday lunchtime.

Work need not be religious in content but will be sympathetic to the space and the diversity of visitors and their sensibilities.
